The evolution of SSDs!

July 16, 2021 in Technology

My M1-based MacBook Pro started throwing errors this week. It warned me that I was running out of disk space, and my poor 16GB computer couldn't generate the large swap files it needed. The culprit - heavily edited podcasts were downloading onto my hard drive.

While I do have enough iCloud storage, I thought the opportunity to offload source files to secondary storage seemed like a good idea. I started moving the files to my trusty external hard drive and quickly ran out of space there as well.

I've been happily using a Silicon Power 1TB Rugged Portable External SSD.
This drive has served me very well until my external needs have finally hit a point that exceeds the drive's capacity. And let's face it, new tech is never a wrong purchase!

I bought a new 2GB Samsung T7from Amazon to replace this one and add more storage capacity. At $429, it's a bit pricey, but with the crypto-mining phase in the plotting stage, HDD prices have gone up recently.

I received the new drive today. And was immediately struck by how small it was. The Silicon Power drive was much smaller than the spinny disks that it replaced. This is about the size of a stack of credit cards. Tiny, really. And while smartphones are getting bigger each generation, it is remarkable to see this difference in just a few short years. I wonder where we will end up?

With super-fast USB-C connections, this will be an excellent addition to the backup library. Though Backblaze may balk at all of the sudden changes!
